Why is Johannesburg called "The City of Gold?"

Johannesburg earned its nickname because of the immense gold deposits discovered here. The city's very foundation is rooted in gold mining. I've seen firsthand how the story of gold is woven into the fabric of Johannesburg, from its architecture to its culture.

In 1884, a prospector struck gold in the area that is now Johannesburg. As you can imagine, this sparked a massive influx of fortune seekers from around the globe. The majority came from Great Britain, and this led to tensions with the local Boers (farmers), eventually escalating into the First and Second Boer Wars. These conflicts ultimately shaped the Republic of South Africa.

What is gold mining like in South Africa?

Gold mining is a complex and demanding process, involving extracting gold ore from deep underground and then crushing and refining it. The process is arduous and can be dangerous.

The discovery of gold also gave rise to a class of exceptionally wealthy individuals known as the Randlords. While visiting a working mine isn't always possible for our guests due to logistical and safety concerns, we always try to incorporate elements of the gold rush story into our Johannesburg tours. We often visit museums detailing the mining history, and I can tell you, the stories are fascinating!

Is South Africa running out of gold? What does this mean for travellers?

While gold reserves are certainly diminishing, it will still take a considerable time before South Africa completely runs out. New technologies are constantly being developed to extract and discover gold in deeper regions.

For travellers, this means that the legacy of the gold rush remains a prominent part of South Africa's identity and tourism landscape. You can still experience the thrill of the gold rush era through historical sites, museums, and even simulated gold panning experiences. Plus, knowing that the industry is still active adds another layer of depth to your visit.

What about seeing molten gold being poured? Is that possible?

Yes, it is! One of the most spectacular experiences you can have in South Africa is witnessing the pouring of molten gold. At incredibly high temperatures, the gold is melted, purified, and then poured into molds to create gold bars.

While we can't guarantee access to active gold pouring sites on every tour (it depends on availability and safety regulations), we always explore alternative ways to showcase this incredible process. This might include visiting a jewelry workshop where you can see gold being worked with, or watching a demonstration of traditional gold refining techniques.
