Gorilla Trekking with Kosher Support
Face to face with mountain gorillas — one of Africa's most profound wildlife encounters.
Choosing Your Gorilla Trekking Destination: Rwanda vs. Uganda
Embarking on a gorilla trek is a profound journey, and choosing your destination is the first step. The Kosher Safari guides you through the nuances of Rwanda and Uganda to find the perfect fit for your preferences and fitness level.
- Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park): Known for its stunning scenery and well-maintained trails, Rwanda offers a more luxurious and often less strenuous trekking experience. Permits here are priced at $1,500 per person, and treks typically range from 1 to 3 hours. The infrastructure is generally better, making for a smoother overall experience.
- Uganda (Bwindi Impenetrable National Park): Uganda presents a more rugged and adventurous trekking option. Permits are more accessible at $800 per person, and the terrain can be more challenging, often requiring 2 to 6 hours of hiking through dense forest. Uganda also offers more budget-friendly accommodation options, allowing for a longer stay or more diverse activities.
Regardless of your choice, we ensure your journey is seamless and fully supported with our glatt kosher provisions.
The Gorilla Encounter: A Glimpse into Their World
After navigating the verdant slopes, you'll spend an awe-inspiring hour in the presence of a mountain gorilla family. This hour is a privilege, allowing us to quietly observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. You might witness a powerful silverback leading his family, protective mothers tending to their young, and playful juveniles swinging through the trees. It's a truly humbling experience, offering a window into their complex social structures and gentle demeanor. We maintain a respectful distance, allowing the gorillas to behave naturally while you capture the moment in your memory and through your lens.
Preparing for Your Trek: Fitness and Essentials
Gorilla trekking requires a moderate to strenuous level of physical fitness. You'll be hiking at altitudes between 2,500m and 3,500m, often on steep, muddy, and uneven terrain. Our expert guides will lead you, but a good level of physical preparation will significantly enhance your enjoyment.
What to wear and bring:
- Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts and trousers to protect against scratches and insects, sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, gaiters to keep mud out of your boots, garden gloves for gripping vegetation, a waterproof jacket and trousers, and a wide-brimmed hat.
- Essentials: A small daypack, at least 2-3 liters of water, high-energy snacks (we'll provide mehadrin options), a camera with extra batteries, binoculars, and insect repellent.
Health Requirements: To protect the gorillas from human illnesses, it is crucial that you are in good health. If you are experiencing symptoms of a cold, flu, or any contagious illness, you will unfortunately not be permitted to trek. We prioritize the well-being of these endangered animals.
Capturing the Moment: Photography Tips
Photography during your gorilla encounter requires careful consideration to respect the animals and your fellow trekkers. Flash photography is strictly prohibited as it can disturb the gorillas. The forest can be quite dark, so we recommend using a camera that performs well in low light, with the ability to set a high ISO (e.g., 800-3200). A fast lens (f/2.8 or f/4) will also be beneficial. Focus on capturing their expressions and interactions, and remember to be discreet with your camera movements.
Glatt Kosher Support on Your Trek
At The Kosher Safari, we understand that maintaining your glatt kosher lifestyle is paramount, even in the heart of Africa. For your gorilla trek, we arrange for a private chef to prepare all your mehadrin meals. Food is carefully sourced from trusted suppliers in Nairobi or Kigali, ensuring the highest standards of kashrut. Our dedicated mashgiach supervises all food preparation, from your hearty breakfast to your packed lunch for the trek, and a delicious dinner upon your return. Furthermore, our full Shabbat and holiday support extends to these remote locations, ensuring all halachic considerations are meticulously handled throughout your journey.
Combining Gorilla Trekking with Your East African Safari
Gorilla trekking seamlessly integrates with a broader East African safari experience. Many of our guests choose to combine their gorilla encounter with classic wildlife viewing in Kenya or Tanzania, or explore other regions of Uganda and Rwanda. We specialize in crafting bespoke itineraries that weave together these incredible experiences, creating a truly comprehensive and culturally rich journey tailored to your interests.
Essential Booking Information
Due to the conservation efforts, only a maximum of 8 trekkers are permitted to visit a gorilla family per day. This strict limitation means that permits are highly sought after. We strongly advise booking your gorilla trekking adventure 6 to 12 months in advance to secure your desired dates, especially if you are traveling during peak season or with a larger group.
