Shark Cage Diving at The Kosher Safari

So, whale watching not quite cutting it for you? I get it. Some of our guests crave a bit more… bite! And when that's the case, shark cage diving off the South African coast is an experience unlike any other. I've seen firsthand how it gets the adrenaline pumping!

What makes South Africa a great place for shark cage diving?

South Africa boasts one of the world's densest populations of great white sharks, making it a prime location for this thrilling activity. The waters around Gansbaai, about a two-hour drive from Cape Town, are particularly rich in marine life, including seals, which are a favorite food source for these magnificent creatures.

The diving boats typically launch early in the morning to maximize your chances of an encounter. While spotting a shark is never 100% guaranteed (it is nature, after all!), the experienced crews know the hotspots and use baiting techniques – sustainably and responsibly, of course – to attract the sharks to the area. I've found the anticipation alone to be half the fun!

What can I expect during a shark cage diving experience?

The experience starts with a safety briefing, then it's time to gear up in a wetsuit – yes, the water can be chilly, even in summer! You'll then be lowered into a sturdy steel cage, designed to keep you safe while providing an incredible view of the sharks as they swim by.

Breathing equipment is provided, so you can comfortably observe these apex predators in their natural habitat. Sometimes, a shark might investigate the cage a little *too* closely! While it's rare for them to actually attack the cage, they might bump it or even lose a tooth in the process. But don't worry, sharks have rows of spare teeth, so they're well-equipped for such encounters!

From a kosher perspective, it's worth noting that the bait used is not kosher. However, the experience itself is purely observational and doesn't involve consuming anything non-kosher. We at The Kosher Safari can help arrange for kosher meals to be available before and after your dive, ensuring your dietary needs are met.

Is shark cage diving dangerous, and what precautions are taken?

While there's an element of perceived danger, shark cage diving is generally considered safe, with stringent precautions in place. Before diving, you'll need to sign an indemnity form acknowledging the inherent risks, however minimal. The cages are rigorously tested and maintained, and the dive operators prioritize safety above all else.

  • Certified Operators: We only work with dive operators who are fully licensed and have a proven track record of safety.
  • Experienced Crew: The crew members are highly trained and experienced in handling sharks and ensuring the safety of divers.
  • Safety Briefings: You'll receive a thorough safety briefing before the dive, covering all aspects of the experience.
  • Well-Maintained Equipment: All equipment, including cages, wetsuits, and breathing apparatus, is regularly inspected and maintained.
