South Africa, Diamonds and The Kosher Safari

What makes South Africa a special destination for kosher travellers?

South Africa is a truly unique destination, even more so when you experience it through a kosher lens! I've seen firsthand how its stunning landscapes, rich history, and diverse culture come together to create unforgettable memories for our guests at The Kosher Safari. And of course, there are the diamonds!

In 1867, a 15-year-old boy named Erasmus Jacobs discovered a sparkling stone on his family's farm along the Orange River. That stone was the first diamond found in South Africa, sparking a diamond rush that would forever change the country and the world. Southern Africa would eventually produce a staggering 65% of the world's diamonds.

Why are South African diamonds so famous?

South Africa is renowned for its diamonds because it is the source of some of the most famous and largest diamonds ever discovered. The Cullinan diamond, the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, now graces the British Crown Jewels. While many associate diamond finds with riverbeds, most diamonds actually come from deep within the earth.

There are two primary types of diamond mines: open-pit and deep-shaft. The Big Hole in Kimberley is the most famous and largest open-pit mine. It's an incredible sight, a relatively small area from which 22 million tons of earth were excavated to unearth 3000 kg of diamonds! Another method, alluvial mining, involves sifting through river gravel. Unfortunately, this method is also associated with the sourcing of "blood diamonds," which fund conflicts.

Once a rough diamond is found, it must be cut and polished to reveal its brilliance. This process can result in a loss of around 50% of the diamond's original mass.

Are diamonds actually cheaper to buy in South Africa?

Despite the common misconception, diamonds are not necessarily cheaper in South Africa; prices are typically set in US Dollars, adhering to a global standard. A one-carat diamond can range from $4,500 to $7,000, depending on quality factors like cut, clarity, and color.

A practical tip for our kosher travellers? Research reputable jewellers beforehand. We recommend asking your rabbi for a recommendation, and always ask for certification from a reputable gemological institute like GIA. This ensures that you're getting a genuine, ethically sourced stone.
