A Kosher Safari for December 2026: Winter Break & Chanukah

December is summer in southern Africa: long days, green bush, newborn animals and Cape Town at its best. In East Africa the short rains are ending and the migration herds are moving south into the Serengeti. We plan private, glatt-kosher safaris for the winter break and for Chanukah, with a mashgiach and chef travelling with you and Shabbat planned into every route.

Two December windows

  • Chanukah 2026: the first candle is on Friday night, 4 December, and Chanukah ends on Saturday 12 December. That's before most school breaks, so it suits couples, empty-nesters and families who can take a week out of term. Read more in our Chanukah safari guide.
  • The winter school break: roughly 18 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 in the US and UK. This is the busiest time of the year for lodges and flights, so the earlier you plan, the more choice you have.

Southern Africa in its summer

  • Green and full of young animals. The rains bring fresh grazing, and November and December are the months for newborn impala, wildebeest and warthog, with the predators close behind.
  • Cape Town and the coast. December is beach and wine-country weather in the Cape. Many families combine Cape Town with a few nights in Kruger or a malaria-free reserve. See Cape Town in December and Cape Town and Kruger.
  • Kosher and community life. Johannesburg and Cape Town have the largest Jewish communities in Africa, so a Shabbat in town with shul and kosher restaurants fits easily around the safari.
  • Plan for the season. Some lodges set minimum stays over the festive period, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in Kruger. We plan drives for the mornings and late afternoons.

East Africa in December

The short rains usually ease in December and the herds move towards the southern Serengeti, where they calve in January and February. It's a quieter, greener time than the July–September peak, and a good fit for families who want Tanzania without the summer crowds. See Serengeti in December and Tanzania in December, or our Tanzania page.

Chanukah in the bush

We plan candle lighting at the lodge each night, with menorahs and oil or candles packed in, and the chef's latkes and sufganiyot after the evening drive. On Friday night we light before Shabbat comes in and plan the drive around it. If you'd like a Shabbat Chanukah with the Johannesburg or Cape Town community, we can build the route around it.

Booking December 2026, and planning December 2027

December 2026 is close, so the best lodges for the school break may already be limited. Tell us your dates and we'll tell you honestly what's still possible. If this year is too soon, now is a good time to plan December 2027, when you'll have the full choice of lodges.

What it costs

Every trip is bespoke. As a guide, our Classic safaris (5–7 nights) run about $5,000–$8,000 per person and Premium (8–12 nights) about $8,000–$14,000 per person, all-inclusive with mashgiach, meals, game drives and in-country flights; international flights are extra. See full pricing.

The first candle is lit on Friday evening, 4 December 2026, and Chanukah ends on Saturday 12 December.

Is December a good time for a safari?

Yes, especially in southern Africa: green landscapes, newborn animals and long days. Expect afternoon storms in Kruger, and plan drives for the mornings and late afternoons.

Is it too late to book for December 2026?

Not always, but the school-break dates are the first to fill. Send us your dates and we'll tell you what's available.
