Stories From Around The Kosher Safari Campfire

There's nothing quite like the crackle of a campfire under the vast African sky. On safari, the days are filled with incredible wildlife encounters, but the evenings are when we truly connect, sharing stories and experiences around the "boma" – the traditional enclosure for gathering around the fire.

What's the story behind the bush fires in the African savanna?

Bush fires are a natural part of the African ecosystem, and they're managed in different ways depending on the goal. I've seen firsthand how controlled burns are used to maintain the grasslands. Our rangers have explained that to keep the grass at a reasonable height, it needs to be cut down, and fire is often the most efficient and natural way to do this.

If the fire is set in the direction of the wind, it creates a quick burn, primarily affecting the grass. But if a more thorough burn is needed, the fire is set against the wind, resulting in a slower, more intense burn. Of course, there are also wildfires, which can be triggered by intense heat, lightning, or, unfortunately, human negligence.

Why should kosher travellers be careful around burnt patches of land?

Even long after a fire appears to be out, hidden dangers can lurk beneath the surface. Our guides always emphasize the importance of caution when encountering a burnt area. Many trees in Africa have incredibly deep roots, some reaching over 10 meters (30 feet) into the earth. During an intense fire, these roots can also burn.

Weeks or even months later, the surface might look normal, but embers can still smolder deep underground. A seemingly harmless patch of ground can be a potential hazard. Never walk over a large, round, burnt patch, even if there hasn't been a fire there recently. The roots might still be burning, and the ground could collapse or reignite. I've seen firsthand the potential danger.

How did we demonstrate this danger to our Kosher Safari guests?

One evening, around the campfire, our guide demonstrated this very phenomenon to our guests. He took a long wooden branch and pushed it straight down into the center of a burnt circle. After just a few seconds, he pulled it out – and it was smoldering! It was a powerful reminder of the hidden dangers and the importance of listening to our experienced guides.

What should kosher travellers know about Pilanesberg?

Pilanesberg National Park is a fantastic safari destination, but kosher travellers need to plan ahead. While finding kosher meals within the park itself can be challenging, we at The Kosher Safari ensure that our guests are fully catered for with delicious, glatt-kosher meals prepared with the utmost care and adherence to Jewish dietary laws.

We often arrange for meals to be prepared off-site and brought into the park, or we set up our own kosher cooking facilities at designated picnic spots. This means you can enjoy the incredible wildlife of Pilanesberg without compromising your commitment to kashrut. We also consider proximity to kosher facilities when selecting accommodations for our guests in the area.

What are some essential kosher travel tips for a safari in South Africa?

Planning a kosher safari requires some extra thought, but it's absolutely achievable. Here are a few things we always advise our guests:

  • Communicate your needs early: Let us know your dietary requirements well in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.
  • Bring kosher snacks: Pack some of your favorite kosher snacks for those times when you might not have access to a full meal.
  • Check for reliable kosher certification: Ensure that any kosher food you consume has reliable kosher certification.
  • Ask questions: Don't hesitate to ask us any questions you have about kosher food and preparation on your safari.

South Africa is a beautiful country with so much to offer, and with careful planning, kosher travelers can experience it all without compromise. And, of course, don't forget the biltong!
