The Experience

A Natural Wonder Unlike Any Other

Ngorongoro Crater is, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Formed two to three million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward, the crater is 19 kilometres across and 600 metres deep — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Its walls form a natural enclosure for an astonishing concentration of wildlife: approximately 25,000 large animals live permanently on the crater floor, including one of the last stable populations of black rhinoceros in Tanzania.

Wildlife in the Crater

Because the crater's walls form a natural boundary, animals rarely leave — which means density here is extraordinary. Lion prides have territories entirely within the crater and are seen daily. The black rhino are genuinely wild but regularly spotted by experienced guides who know their favoured routes. Elephant bulls descend from the rim forests to feed on the floor, and Lake Magadi's alkaline shores attract thousands of lesser flamingo. All of this unfolds within a 30-minute drive in any direction from the centre.

For first-time safari visitors, the crater offers something uniquely reassuring: you are almost guaranteed exceptional sightings. For experienced safari-goers, it offers perspective — nowhere else can you observe the entire ecosystem laid out below you before you descend.

The Rim Experience

Most visitors spend their days on the crater floor and return to lodges on the rim in the evenings. Rim lodges offer a perspective unlike anything else in African accommodation: sitting on a deck with the entire crater — and its thousands of animals — spread 600 metres below you as the mist clears with the morning sun. We select rim lodges based on kitchen facilities suitable for kosher catering and proximity to the paths used for any walking activities on Shabbat.

Combining Ngorongoro with the Serengeti

Ngorongoro and the Serengeti are adjacent — the Ngorongoro Conservation Area forms the eastern boundary of the Serengeti ecosystem. We almost always recommend combining the two into a single itinerary: crater floor game drives in the morning, a picnic lunch on the rim, and an afternoon flight or drive into the Serengeti. The contrast — intimate crater density versus vast open plains — is one of the great safari experiences.

Kosher & Shabbat

Our partner lodges on the Ngorongoro rim have dedicated kitchen space for mashgiach supervision. Catering is arranged from our Nairobi and Arusha networks. The crater is only 180 kilometres from Arusha, which means supply logistics are more straightforward here than at remote Serengeti camps. Shabbat on the rim is a unique experience — Havdalah looking out over the caldera as the stars emerge above the crater walls.
