Getting to Africa: Flights and Logistics

Which airline, which route, which stopover — the definitive guide to flying to safari.

Navigating International Routes to Africa

Embarking on a luxury kosher safari begins long before you set foot on African soil, with the journey to get there. We meticulously plan your entire itinerary, including flight recommendations, to ensure a smooth and comfortable experience. Here’s a breakdown of the primary routes our guests typically take:

  • From New York (JFK): Direct flights are available to major hubs like Johannesburg (JNB) with airlines such as South African Airways or Delta, taking approximately 15 hours. Kenya Airways also offers direct flights to Nairobi (NBO), also around 15 hours. Alternatively, many guests opt for routes via European cities like London (LHR) or the Middle East, which can break up the long journey. Ethiopian Airlines offers connections via Addis Ababa (ADD).
  • From London (LHR): London serves as an excellent gateway with numerous direct options. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly direct to Johannesburg (JNB) in about 11 hours, and to Cape Town (CPT) in roughly 11.5 hours. For East Africa, British Airways and Kenya Airways offer direct flights to Nairobi (NBO), taking approximately 8 hours.
  • From Tel Aviv (TLV): For our guests traveling from Israel, El Al provides a convenient direct flight to Johannesburg (JNB) in about 8.5 hours, offering a seamless start to your adventure. Ethiopian Airlines also offers a popular route via Addis Ababa (ADD), typically involving a 6-hour flight to Addis followed by a 3-hour connection to Johannesburg or Nairobi.

When considering your route, we advise balancing flight duration with potential stopover benefits and, of course, the availability of appropriate kosher meals.

Choosing Your Airline: Kosher Meals and Comfort

For our guests, the availability and quality of kosher meals are paramount. We work with you to select airlines that best meet your dietary needs, from basic kosher options to mehadrin standards. Here’s our assessment of common carriers:

  • El Al: Unsurprisingly, El Al offers the most reliable and highest standard of kosher meals, including Badatz options, making it a preferred choice for our guests flying from Tel Aviv.
  • Turkish Airlines: Generally provides good quality pre-ordered kosher meals, often fresh and substantial. We recommend confirming your meal request well in advance.
  • Emirates: Offers kosher meals that are generally available, but require ordering at least 72 hours in advance. The quality is usually consistent.
  • British Airways: Kosher meal quality can be variable. While often satisfactory, they can sometimes be more basic than other carriers. Always reconfirm your order.
  • Ethiopian Airlines: Offers basic kosher meals, typically pre-packaged and simpler in nature. While available, they are not as comprehensive as those on El Al or Turkish.

Given the long flight times, especially from North America, we often recommend considering business or first class. The enhanced comfort, lie-flat seats, and superior service can make a significant difference in arriving refreshed and ready for safari.

Seamlessly Connecting: Domestic and Bush Flights

Once you arrive in Africa, your journey continues with domestic and often exhilarating bush flights that are integral to your safari experience.

  • East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania): Here, small bush planes, typically 12-seat Cessna Caravans, are the lifeblood connecting remote national parks and conservancies. These flights offer spectacular aerial views of the landscape and wildlife below. However, they come with strict luggage limitations: generally 15-20kg (33-44 lbs) per person in a soft-sided bag. Hard-shell suitcases are not permitted due to the limited cargo space and weight restrictions. We will provide detailed packing guidelines to ensure you’re well-prepared.
  • Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia): While initial connections between major cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town might be on larger domestic jets, transfers to more remote safari lodges often involve smaller charter planes or light aircraft with similar luggage restrictions. Again, soft bags are essential.

We coordinate all these internal flights, ensuring seamless transfers from your international arrival to your first safari camp, complete with private ground transfers and our local team’s assistance.

Strategic Stopovers: Breaking Up Your Journey

For many of our guests, especially those traveling from afar, a stopover can be an excellent way to manage jet lag and add another cultural dimension to their trip. We can help you plan the most suitable options:

  • Dubai: A popular choice, Dubai offers a surprising number of kosher restaurants and a vibrant Chabad community, making it an accessible and comfortable stopover for Jewish travelers.
  • Istanbul: While kosher food options are more limited than in London or Dubai, they are available with prior arrangement, primarily through local Jewish community resources. It offers a rich historical and cultural experience.
  • London: An easy and convenient stopover, London boasts a large and well-established Jewish community, particularly in areas like Golders Green and Hendon, where kosher restaurants, bakeries, and shops are abundant.
  • Addis Ababa: Primarily a transit hub for Ethiopian Airlines, we generally recommend it for connections rather than extended stopovers for our kosher-keeping guests, as kosher food options are extremely limited.

A stopover can help you arrive in Africa refreshed, ready to fully immerse yourself in the safari adventure without the immediate burden of significant jet lag.

Managing Jet Lag for a Refreshed Arrival

Arriving rested is key to enjoying your safari from day one. Jet lag can vary depending on your departure point:

  • From Europe/Middle East: East Africa is only 1-2 hours ahead of Central European Time, resulting in minimal jet lag. Southern Africa is also relatively close, making for an easier adjustment.
  • From US East Coast: The time difference to East Africa is typically 7 hours, and 6 hours to Southern Africa. This is a moderate shift, but manageable.

We recommend staying hydrated, adjusting your sleep schedule gradually before departure, and considering a stopover if you're particularly sensitive to time changes. Our itineraries are designed with your comfort in mind, often allowing for a relaxed first day to acclimate.

Our Expert Booking Tips for Your Safari Flights

Securing the best flights requires foresight and strategy. Here are our top tips:

  • Book Ahead: For peak safari season (June to October, and around Jewish holidays), we strongly advise booking your international flights 4-6 months in advance to secure preferred routes and fares.
  • Leverage Miles and Points: For such long journeys, using frequent flyer miles or credit card points for business or first class can be an excellent investment, significantly enhancing your comfort and arrival experience.
  • Let Us Assist: While we don't book international flights directly, we provide comprehensive guidance and recommendations tailored to your specific needs, integrating seamlessly with your safari schedule. We understand the nuances of kosher travel and are here to help you navigate the logistics every step of the way.
