African safari destination — What to Wear on Safari

What to Wear on Safari

The dress code is simple: neutral tones, layers, and comfortable shoes.

The Golden Rule of Safari Attire: Embrace Neutrals

When packing for your safari with The Kosher Safari, the most important guideline to remember is to stick to neutral colours. We recommend shades of khaki, olive green, brown, beige, and grey. These colours blend seamlessly with the natural environment, allowing you to observe wildlife without causing disturbance. Bright colours, including stark white, can startle animals, making them less likely to approach or behave naturally. Furthermore, black is best avoided as it can attract tsetse flies, particularly in regions like the Serengeti or parts of the Okavango Delta. Our goal is to ensure our guests have the most authentic and unobtrusive wildlife viewing experience possible.

Another crucial colour to avoid is camouflage. While it might seem intuitive for a safari, wearing camouflage patterns is actually illegal for civilians in several African countries, including Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. We advise against packing any items with these patterns to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey from arrival to departure.

Mastering Layers for African Climates

Africa's climate, especially in safari regions, is one of dramatic contrasts, often within a single day. This makes layering absolutely essential for comfort. Mornings, particularly during early game drives in open vehicles, can be surprisingly cold, often ranging from 5-15°C depending on the location and season. As the sun climbs higher, temperatures can soar to 25-35°C by midday, cooling again in the late afternoon. Our mehadrin catering and Shabbat arrangements mean you'll be out enjoying the wilderness from dawn till dusk, so adaptable clothing is key.

We recommend the following layering system:

  • Base Layer: For winter months (June-August in Southern Africa, cooler dry season in East Africa), a thermal base layer is invaluable. Otherwise, a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt (preferably quick-dry and moisture-wicking) will protect from sun and provide a comfortable foundation.
  • Mid-Layer: A warm fleece jacket or a down vest is perfect for chilly mornings and evenings. A vest offers excellent core warmth without restricting arm movement.
  • Outer Layer: A windproof and waterproof jacket is highly recommended, especially if you are traveling during the green season (typically November-April in many regions), when afternoon showers are common. Choose one in a neutral colour.

For fabrics, prioritize quick-drying, moisture-wicking, and breathable materials like technical synthetics or lightweight cotton blends. These will keep you comfortable in varying temperatures and dry quickly if you encounter rain or need to wash items. Avoid heavy denim, which takes a very long time to dry – a practical consideration given many lodges offer same-day laundry services.

Footwear and Headwear: Comfort and Protection

Your choice of footwear is vital for both comfort and safety on safari. For game drives and any walking safaris or bush walks led by our experienced guides, we strongly recommend closed-toe walking shoes or light hiking boots. These offer protection from thorns, dust, and insects, and provide good support on uneven terrain. Ensure they are comfortable and broken-in before your trip.

Once you are back at camp, relaxing between activities, sandals or flip-flops are perfect for unwinding. Many of our luxury lodges feature exquisite facilities, and comfortable camp footwear will allow you to enjoy them fully. A wide-brimmed hat is an absolute non-negotiable item. The African sun is incredibly strong, and a good hat will protect your face, neck, and ears from harmful UV rays during long hours spent in open safari vehicles. Look for one with a chin strap to keep it secure during windy moments.

Tznius on Safari: Practical and Halachically Minded Dressing

For our Jewish women guests, we understand the importance of dressing according to halachic principles while ensuring practicality and comfort in the safari environment. While long skirts are often a preferred choice for tznius, they can be impractical for the active nature of a safari. Climbing in and out of high safari vehicles multiple times a day, or embarking on walking safaris, is much easier and safer in trousers.

We recommend packing wide-leg trousers or culottes in neutral, quick-dry fabrics. These offer modesty, comfort, and ease of movement. Pair them with long-sleeve, lightweight shirts – many excellent safari-appropriate options are available that are breathable and offer sun protection. Some women find it comfortable to wear trousers for game drives and excursions, and then change into a long skirt or dress for relaxation around camp, especially during Shabbat. For head covering, a wide-brimmed safari hat serves a dual purpose, offering excellent sun protection while respectfully fulfilling the mitzvah. We ensure our guests have private spaces and full support for all Shabbat and holiday observances, allowing you to focus on your spiritual and safari experience.

Smart Packing Tips: Laundry and Essentials

One of the luxuries of a Kosher Safari adventure is that most high-end lodges offer excellent same-day laundry service. This means you do not need to pack an outfit for every single day of your trip. We generally advise packing enough clothing for about 3-4 days, and then utilizing the lodge laundry services. This significantly lightens your luggage, making transfers between camps smoother and more enjoyable, especially when flying on light aircraft with strict baggage weight limits.

Beyond your clothing, remember essentials like sunglasses (polarized are best for reducing glare), a small daypack for carrying water, cameras, and personal items on game drives, and a good quality insect repellent. While we provide a comprehensive packing list before your departure, these core clothing principles will set you up for a comfortable, respectful, and truly immersive experience in the African wilderness with The Kosher Safari.
