Rwanda + Uganda Gorilla Safari

Track mountain gorillas in two countries — the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi's ancient forest.

Encountering Mountain Gorillas: A Dual-Country Expedition

Few wildlife encounters compare to the profound experience of meeting mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Our Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Safari offers you the extraordinary opportunity to track these magnificent primates in two distinct and equally captivating environments. This journey allows our guests to observe different family groups, appreciate varied forest ecosystems, and gain a deeper understanding of the conservation efforts that protect these critically endangered species. We meticulously plan every detail to ensure your focus remains on the breathtaking landscapes and the awe-inspiring moments with the gorillas, knowing all your glatt kosher needs are expertly handled.

Rwanda: The Land of a Thousand Hills and Gentle Giants

Our journey often begins in Rwanda, a country known for its stunning verdant hills and the resilience of its people. We typically spend two nights in the vibrant capital, Kigali, allowing for a city tour that includes a visit to the profoundly moving Kigali Genocide Memorial. This essential experience provides crucial context to Rwanda's history and its remarkable journey of healing and reconciliation.

From Kigali, we drive north to Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans), nestled among the dramatic Virunga volcano slopes. Here, the gorilla trekking experience is renowned for its accessibility. While still requiring a good level of fitness, the terrain is generally less challenging than in Uganda. After locating a gorilla family, our guests enjoy a precious one-hour visit, observing their complex social dynamics and gentle interactions. Permits for gorilla trekking in Rwanda are currently $1,500 per person, reflecting the country's high-value tourism strategy.

Beyond the gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers other rewarding activities. We can arrange treks to see the playful golden monkeys, a subspecies endemic to the Virunga region, or embark on a poignant hike to the gravesite of Dian Fossey, the pioneering primatologist whose work brought global attention to the mountain gorillas.

Uganda: The Pearl of Africa and Bwindi's Ancient Realm

Crossing the border into Uganda, often referred to as the "Pearl of Africa," we journey to the ancient depths of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a truly remarkable ecosystem, home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas – nearly half of the world's remaining population. Bwindi presents a more rugged and immersive trekking experience; the terrain is steeper, and the forest is denser, living up to its "impenetrable" name. While more challenging, the reward of encountering gorillas in this pristine, ancient rainforest is immense. Gorilla permits in Uganda are significantly more accessible at $700 per person, offering excellent value for this extraordinary encounter.

Our time in Bwindi typically includes two to three nights, allowing for a gorilla trek and opportunities for forest walks to appreciate the incredible biodiversity. Depending on your interests and the length of your safari, we can extend your Ugandan adventure. Options include visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its unique tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector and diverse wildlife, or heading to Kibale Forest National Park for an exhilarating chimpanzee trekking experience, observing our closest primate relatives in their natural habitat.

Crafting Your Gorilla Safari Itinerary

A typical Rwanda and Uganda gorilla safari with The Kosher Safari spans 8 to 12 days, offering a comprehensive and comfortable experience. Our suggested itinerary often begins with two nights in Kigali, followed by two nights near Volcanoes National Park for your Rwandan gorilla trek. We then facilitate a seamless border crossing and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for two to three nights, allowing for your Ugandan gorilla trek and further exploration. For those extending their journey, an additional two to three nights in Queen Elizabeth National Park can round out an incredible East African adventure.

Guests should prepare for a moderate to challenging level of fitness. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through varied terrain, which can be steep, muddy, and require several hours of walking. We recommend preparing with regular walks and hikes prior to your safari. The altitude in these regions ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 meters (6,500 to 9,800 feet), so cool temperatures are common, especially in the mornings and evenings. We advise packing layers and waterproof gear, as rain can occur at any time in these rainforest environments.
