What Is a Kosher Safari in Africa? Everything You Need to Know
What Makes a Safari "Kosher"?
A kosher safari is a luxury African wildlife experience designed specifically for observant Jewish travellers. It combines world-class game drives, stunning landscapes, and five-star lodges with strict kashrus standards, Shabbat observance, and respect for halacha at every turn.
Unlike standard safaris where you join a mixed group and eat whatever the lodge serves, a kosher safari provides:
- Glatt-mehadrin meals prepared by a dedicated kosher kitchen team, often under Beth Din supervision
- Shabbat arrangements including candle lighting times, minyan coordination, pre-prepared meals, and no driving on Shabbos
- A full-time mashgiach who travels with the group to ensure all food standards are maintained
- Private game drives and activities scheduled around davening times
- Chalav Yisroel dairy products where available
Where Do Kosher Safaris Take Place?
The most popular destinations for kosher safaris in Africa include:
South Africa
The most established destination for kosher safaris. The Johannesburg Beth Din provides excellent kosher infrastructure, making it easy to source mehadrin products. Popular reserves include Sabi Sands (Big Five guaranteed), Pilanesberg (malaria-free, great for families), and Madikwe (exclusive and intimate).
Tanzania
Home to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater — two of Africa's most iconic wildlife destinations. The Great Migration passes through the Serengeti between June and October, offering once-in-a-lifetime sightings. Kosher catering is flown in from Nairobi or Johannesburg.
Rwanda
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a bucket-list experience. Combined with a Big Five safari in South Africa or Tanzania, it creates the ultimate kosher African adventure.
Kenya, Botswana & Zimbabwe
The Masai Mara in Kenya, the Okavango Delta in Botswana, and Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border all offer incredible experiences that can be made fully kosher with advance planning.
How Does the Kosher Food Work?
This is the question we get asked most. Here's how it works in practice:
- Advance preparation: Our kitchen team arrives 24-48 hours before guests to kasher equipment, set up separate meat and dairy stations, and begin food prep.
- Fresh ingredients: Meats are sourced from certified glatt-kosher suppliers (typically Johannesburg or Cape Town). Fresh produce is checked for insects according to halacha.
- Separate everything: Dedicated pots, pans, cutlery, and serving dishes for meat and dairy. Colour-coded and kept strictly apart.
- Mashgiach on site: A qualified mashgiach supervises every meal, from breakfast through dinner, ensuring standards never slip.
- Gourmet quality: This isn't "airline kosher food." Our chefs create restaurant-quality dishes — think braised lamb shank, seared tuna, fresh salads, homemade challah, and decadent desserts.
What About Shabbat on Safari?
Shabbat in the African bush is one of the most magical experiences you can have. Here's what it looks like:
- Friday afternoon: An early game drive returns before candle lighting. The lodge is prepared with white tablecloths, fresh flowers, and a Shabbat atmosphere.
- Candle lighting: Times are calculated precisely for your GPS coordinates — we provide a full zmanim sheet.
- Friday night dinner: A multi-course Shabbat meal with kiddush, challah, and singing under the stars. Often our best meal of the trip.
- Shabbat morning: Davening (we bring siddurim and a sefer Torah when possible), followed by a leisurely kiddush and lunch.
- Shabbat afternoon: Rest, read, swim (if the pool is within the eruv), or simply enjoy the sounds of the bush. No game drives, no driving.
- Motzei Shabbat: Havdalah under the African sky, then a night game drive to spot nocturnal animals.
Who Goes on a Kosher Safari?
Our guests come from all over the world — Israel, the US, UK, Australia, Europe, and South Africa itself. Common groups include:
- Families — multigenerational trips are our specialty
- Couples — honeymoons and anniversaries
- Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations — a unique alternative to a hotel ballroom
- Friend groups — women's trips, men's getaways
- Community groups — shul trips, school groups, charitable organisations
How Much Does a Kosher Safari Cost?
A fully kosher safari in Africa typically costs between $5,000 and $15,000 per person, depending on the destination, duration, lodge tier, and group size. This includes accommodation, all meals, game drives, transfers, park fees, and kosher catering. See our full pricing guide for detailed breakdowns.
